OSX Panther has problems with external hard drive

I recently had to reinstall Mac OSX Panther on my computer.
For some reason, an external drive I've been using for a
few years (which has all my photographic and illustrator
files on it) no longer works with my computer. It shows
up in my system profiler, which sees the drive, and tells
me how much memory it has, but it will not open it, or
let me see and work with any of my image files. I've tried
using Drive Setup to repair it, with no effect. How can I
get my computer talking to this old drive? I'm feeling
impoverished without my image libraries to work from!
 
I have read several accounts of Tiger have trouble reading external drives. Is it a Lacie drive?
