OSX Random Crashes

I thought this OS wasn't supposed to crash?! ::ha::

For some reason, every so often OSX just crashes for no reason at all. For example I leave my computer for 5 minutes, no apps running and I come back to the 'You need to restart your computer' message! Huh! What's all that about then?

It even happens while the screensaver is running sometimes. The screen saver is the 'Flurry' screensaver provided by apple so it can't be that.

This has been happening more recently, since I updated to 10.2.6 I would say.

Any ideas?

No, haven't really ever used it. I can't see anything noticible. Next time it happens I will take a look. Thanks :)

3 step process usually does wonders with this type of problem
1. restart in Single user mode (boot with CMD key and letter-S) Run /fsck -y, if problems are repaired, run fsck -y again, until complete with no repairs, then type reboot

2. Download and install the OSX 10.2.6 COMBO updater

3. Open the Disk Utitlity (in your Utility folder) click on the First Aid tab, click on your boot volume, and click on repair permissions, let that complete (takes abut 20 minutes or so)

(Sorry, I lied) 4. Choose Shutdown (completely resets your hardware) After system shuts itself down, restart normally. This should help! Let us know how it goes :)

What does that do exactly?

Thanks :)

fsck runs the "filesystem consistency check and interactive repair" routine, the parameter -y means to "Assume a yes response to all questions asked by fsck."

To find out more about fsck than you perhaps ever wanted to know :p, open your Terminal and type man fsck -- followed by the return key -- then hit any key to scroll through the few pages of text.

If any software will not fix your random (but "constant") constant crashes you should really check about hardware problems... Maybe a peripheral (early HP device drivers were the worst nightmare for OS X :p ) or even worst a bad ram, graphics, etc. inside your mac! Let us know what gives...

What about network? Are you automounting a network-volume? Maybe that one mess up with your system?!

Thanks guys.
So can I do this fsck -y without reinstalling 10.2.6 and that might do the trick? Or do I have to reinstall 10.2.6 afterwards as suggeested by DeltaMac?

I should lead in to any problems by doing the fsck -y thing? Should I?

fsck -y might solve your problems, but it might not. If it solves your problem, then you do not need to try re-installing 10.2.6.

If fsck -y does not help, then you have other options, including checking for hardware/software conflicts and reinstalling the OS. If you do end up reinstalling Jaguar, be sure to update it to 10.2.6 using the COMBO updater, rather than applying a bunch of incremental updates.

In any event, running fsck -y should not cause you any problems.
