my wifes computer will not start up. i have ran the disk utility from the cd...everything seems ok. i am now trying to reinstall without the reformatting the entire drive optoin, but the section where i choose a destination is getting hung up. the disk does show up but is unselectable and the little pinwheel to the right of the window just keeps turning. any thoughts are appreciated.

it is an imac bought in '06 or '07.

the install is for 10.5 i believe, but may be 10.4
An iMac "bought in '06 or '07" is not a specific model. Neither is "10.5 i believe, but may be 10.4" a specific version of your OS.

This information is important if we are to help you diagnose and suggest remedies for your problems. None of us have access to your computer. We need for you to provide it. The software information should be printed on the optical disc. The model of your computer be stamped on the rear of its case.

The info label for your iMac is on the bottom of the stand

The OS X version is printed on the label, such as "Mac OS X 10.4.7" or something similar.
The disk number (basically a part number) that you provided doesn't help at all.

Is the install disc black or gray?

If it's black, it should work. As long as the version on that retail disc is later than the one the Mac was shipped with from the factory.

If it's gray, it has to be the same disc that came with that Mac (or with another Mac of the same model and within weeks of manufacturing in the same facility).
