OSX Server not logging in

I am running the latest and greatest version of OSX Server fully updated.

Problem: Upon restarting or cold booting the system, I am unable to log in. After I enter the user/pass, it sits there for 10-15 seconds, then shakes its head 'no' and doesn't let me pass. Yes, I'm typing my password and username correctly.

Solution #1: I've searched Apple's forums, and several other people have had this same problem. Apple's answer: boot to the server installation CD and run the usual disk checker, repair permissions, etc. I did as they suggested and it didn't solve the issue. Apple's answer if that doesn't work: format and reinstall.

The installation is standard, has no "extra" 3rd party software installed on it, and is only very lightly used. This is pitiful performance from a $1000 piece of software. Yes, I've unplugged any 3rd party USB and Firewire devices. Yes, I've reset the PRAM, yes, I've reset the Open Firmware, none of which have an effect on solving this problem. The only fix so far is Apple's "format and reinstall" answer that I'm aware of. I've even replace the entire hard drive. I've replaced the RAM. Still, OSX Server manages to kill itself on a regular basis. I've also removed my installation from the main machine, and then installed it fresh on an alternative machine, and yes, same problem within a week of use.

This problem recurs often. I've formatted and reinstalled about 12 times now over the past 4 months, as per Apple's official fix for this problem What happened to that rock solid quality control that we were used to in days of old? I've already asked the salesman at Apple, and no, they won't refund my money for this obviously unreliable product.

I was hoping one of you might have a better solution than Apple's "format and reinstall" ? That's such an M$ answer!

Thanks!
