OSX Tiger and MSFT Exchange 5.5

I am a new MAC user. I run a network of Windows XP PCs and three WIN 2000 Advanced Servers. Once server is running Exchange 5.5 (all servers and apps fully patched).

Now I have one user who have has joined us with a MAC PowerBook running OSX - Tiger 10.4.3. They have MAC:Office 2004 with Entourage as their email client (yes I now know that Entourage does not work with Exchange 5.5

BUT I still need to provide corporate email.

So: I downloaded MAC:Outlook 2001 and installed OS9 support and installed MAC:Outlook 2001. The installation was a bit sketchy (sorry for the editorial) but eventually I was able to get the application to function BUT NOT connect to the Exchange server. I can see and access files and shares, save and retrieve files, access the internet and all the WIN200 servers, surf the internet BUT I cannot get the Outlook Client on my MAC to access the Exchage server.

This is not easy.... please help - offer suggestions. I am fairly well versed in PCs, Apps, Servers and Networking, but his one has stumped me.

The only solution I see so far is to purchase and upgrade to Exchange Server 2002 (at great expense).

Any other ideas?

Thanks in advance.

Well according to the Microsoft Office 2004 Resource Kit here is your answer:

Directing an Entourage 2004 Exchange mail account to an earlier version of Exchange Server, such as Exchange Server 5.5, does not work because earlier versions of Exchange Server do not support WebDAV. Exchange Server 5.5 users can use Outlook, Remote Desktop Connection Client for Mac, or Virtual PC for Mac for full Exchange functionality, and might be able to use an IMAP account in Entourage to get mail from the server if the server has IMAP enabled.

Thank you very much for your reply... theoretically you and MSFT is right but I cannot find a white paper to outline the steps.

I have gotten everthing to work EXCEPT the connectivity between the MAC:Outlook 2001 client and the Exchange 5.5 Server.

I know that I can probably get it to work if we upgrade to Windows Server 2003 and Exchange 2003 - but there is considerable cost and while the software we are using is old is FULLY functional and meets our needs.

Any more links or thoughts?
