i built up a decent mp3 collection on my laptop but the lure of decent speakers has made me decide to migrate them over to my pc

how exactly can i go about this?

both have NICs but i dont have a hub or router, both also have firewire ports... if only there was a firewire target mode for pc...

oh, and the filesystem is ntfs but i have a spare partition or two that i can reformat if needed

If you are on the same network you can do this with samba. If you don't have a hub or modem, you should still be able to connect the two, but depending on what kind of network card you have in your XP box, you might need a crossover cable. Mac's are smart in that they can use either patch or crossover cables to connect two computers. But only some PC networks cards are smart enough to do that. If you don't get a link light, then you know you need to get a different kind of cable.
Once you get a link light, all you need to do is share your PC drive. Then you can connect via samba. To do this, in the finder go to "Go->Connect to Server" or press CMD-K. When you get the dialog window, in the address field type (no quotes): "smb://ComputeName/ShareName"
you will then be prompted for workgroup, username, and password. Enter that stuff and it should put your windows drive on your mac desktop. Then just copy your files over.
