overlapped extent allocation

eMac - all peripherals disconected except USB mouse and keyboard.

For no apparent reason my eMac stopped working with the rotating ball doing it's thing. I attempted a reboot and it now hangs on the "Login Window Starting" message.

I can start it in single user mode but not Safe Mode - hangs at the same message. I ran fsck and this reported about 40 overlapped extent allocation errors. I re-ran fsck numerous times and none of these errors were reopaired although the "File System Modified" maessage came up each time.

After a while I decided to try booting off my install disks. I can boot from the Hardware test CD (by holding down "c") and the hardware passes all the available test but the computer will not boot from the install DVD. It is the original install/restore DVD that came with the eMac.

So two questions really - How long do I keep running fsck before giving up on that approach and how can I get the DVD to boot so I can run the drive utilities??

Any help appreciated!
