Dr. Varadarajan and Apple are doing it again with the release of the NEW 64- bit Xserve G5. Building on the original concept, Virginia Tech has ordered 1,100 Xserve G5 models to replace the current System X models due to the smaller size, stackability, and lower power consumption of the Xserve series. With the charge in digital guard, Virginia Tech has offered PC Mall a limited supply of original System X G5 models to be sold to the public. Not only can you now own a piece of computer history, but have one of the most powerful computer in the world working for you!

Each unit comes with a "Certificate of Authenticity" which consists of a letter with the serial number of the Power Mac, signed by members of the Virginia Tech Supercomputer Team.

What can you say about that? :)

I wonder how many will buy them just because of that....

If they dropped the price another US$400 I would. However, IMHO machines used as heavily used as these machines from a super computer cluster shouldn't be priced as high as they are. Plus, they don't even come with a modem or iLife '04.

Paying for their history..."the nostalgia".

Besides...we should see 2.8 or 3 ghz models within the next 2-3 months.

At that price the monitor/display (and keyboard & mouse) should be included.

Well, it's not wise to bet against the stupidity of human beings in collective. It may be a collectors item for 1,100 people... :-\

From what they (macmall) said on their page, they only have a small quantity of them. I'd guess 200 or so.

Heck, people pay how much on ebay for a working Apple Lisa machine? My i90c cell phone has more processing power than a Lisa...it's all about collecting rare stuff I guess.

Never underestimate people...especially how they can do some pretty "not-wise" things (trying to be nice here). Common sense dictates that 1/2 the population has none at one time or another. :)

Geez... using a computer like that isn't like using a car for a long time. It's not going to get caked up with soot or covered in grease. Those computers are quite a deal, considering the new dual 2 Ghz models have half the RAM and start at $200 more.

I'd love to be able to afford one... *sigh*
