Ownership

I have a small ownership problem in Jaguar. When I installed Jaguar I created a dummy account I didn't intend to use. I found that many directory's ownership was transferred to this new account. This was not such a big problem since Jaguar makes it easy to change ownership.

The only remaining problem I have is with ichat and Sherlock. When I launch these in the account I created after install, they begin to launch and then quit. I know this is a permission problem because I can launch them using the Pseudo utility and from the other account.

I have tried everything and I can't figure out which files ownership settings are causing the problem.

Anyone have any ideas?

without knowing the exact particulars of your situation, i think you could try manually setting the permissions in terminal.

chown -R username /Applications

everything in applications will know be owned by the user 'username'

hope that helps.

I tried performing a chown on the applications directory. This seemed to go through fine but did not solve the problem. What other specifics do you need to know?

I am thinking it must be a file somewhere else than the application directory. Since ichat, mail, and sherlock have only the actual app in the applications directory. Other than doing a chown on the system which I am reluctant to do, I can think of no other recourse than to reinstall Jaguar.

I will wait a few days to see if anyone has any other possible solutions.

Apple has a program to download that resets file permissions and ownership to their default values. The file is called "Repair_Privileges.dmg.bin". Sorry, I don't have a link for it. You might want to look under "Support" at Apple's website.

Yes I tried this. No change. They state it is only for OS 10.1.5. I was hoping it would help but unfortunately it didn't
