Packet loss / slow speeds on Mac

I have an ADSL 512 connection that achieves 60KB download speeds when directly connected to my iMac 20" 1.25Ghz or to my PC. When I put my wireless/router/firewall in between (Netcomm 5540), the PC still does the same speeds but the mac get almost nothing. Major packet losses and more going out than coming in! Both are cabled, not wireless. Have swapped cables, ports, etc and no impact.
The system uses DHCP assigned by the router.

I'm reasonably informed but rapidly getting out of my depth...
 
try to set a private static ip address to the mac. dont know if its related, but i noticed more response by doing this

No luck I'm afraid. Still more out than in.
 
type ping www.test.com in the terminal and watch the packets. Are there any losses?
How is the lan access between mac and pc? Did you check the cables?
