pages problem

My Mac version 10.4.9 froze when attempting to save pages document. On reboot, I couldn't re-open document and tried to save as word document. Now the document appears as a feature-less icon (neither pages or word) and I can't open it at all. It's a book chapter and i only have a very old saved version. Feel slightly terrible. Any advice gratefully received...Thanks.

Highlight the Document, go up to "file" on the top menu bar, go down to "get info", go to the "open with" menu and choose the "Pages" app. to open it with and try reopening it again.

Hi! I converted document back into Pages but still no joy. It sits there but a message comes that it can't be opened when i try to with the pages programme.

Pages can import a variety of documents created in other applications, including the following file formats: plain text (.txt), Rich Text Format (.rtf and .rtfd), HTML (.html), AppleWorks 6 word processing (.cwk), Word (.doc), and WordML (.xml).
Maybe give one of these a try?

Tried opening in other file formats. They don't even recognise there's a document. When I call up file info it lists it as a pages publication, that it has 120k; it says i've opened it, when i just get the message it can't be opened. The icon is there. I can move it around but there's no opening the blooming thing. The problem originated when I tried to save it. The pages programme froze. Any ideas on a cure?

Here's a method to find if there's anything to be recovered in the document:

Right-click (or hold down control and click) the pages document to display its contextual menu. Choose "Show package contents". There should be a file inside named "index.xml.gz". Copy it to the desktop and double-click it to unarchive the file. Drag the resulting file "index.xml" and drop it on the Safari icon to open the file in the browser. The text will show up in the browser window, but some formatting will be gone.

Good luck : )

I'm so truly thankful for help received so far. I followed instructions of last post. Opened file to find "index.xml.gz" and move to desktop. When I double clicked just got this same file name. Tried dropping this onto Safari icon and when i opened this, didn't know where to find possible new file or whether operation had worked (the index.xml. had not emerged after double click). Where should i look on safari? Am i missing a step? Whoever you are who has helped. Thank you so much. Karen.
