palm desktop 4.1 & old user data

hi,

10.2.8 led me down the path to a complete replacement of my 17" powerbook. i burned my personal data,
including palm desktop 4.1 user data,
onto a dvd. now the new machine is here, i installed palm desktop 4.1, and the setup assistant asks me to point it to my old user data. but the "User Data" file is grayed out and unloadable. if i copy it off the dvd onto my hard drive, same thing. if i use File->Open... inside the palm desktop app, same thing. if i create a new user with the same name and manually copy the User Data file into the appropriate dir, it won't let me switch to that user.

seen this? know what to do?

jon.

Create a new user, probably the same as you had before. Find the data file, and open both that and the backup in HexEdit. Copy everything from your old file to the new, empty file and save it, and tell us if this works.

Is the data file a package? (To check, right/control-click on it and see if it says "Show Package Contents.") If so, you can show the contents and copy everything within the old file to the new file.

i did something new instead: copied the backup to my hard drive and double-clicked it. this launched palm desktop and opened all the data, but not associated with any user (and with no obvious way to do so in the interface).

then i created a new user and copied my backup user data file over his. that worked. (?)

time to export and use ical/address book.
