Does anyone know if there are OSX - OS 5 interworking/improvements/opportunities/developments?

Does it have any consequences for us Mac OSX users?

PocketPC 2002 by MS might look nice, might be nice, but PalmOS not only has a very large installed user base (80%+), it's also still selling more Palms than the PocketPC competition together. Plus there's Sony, Handspring and others doing quite well.

PalmOS 5 actually sounds quite promising. They're taking the GOOD stuff of Palm and add the GOOD stuff that needs to be added. We'll see when the devices are out, though.

Plus, there is Mac compatibility out of the box.

The REAL competition for Palm & PocketPC is Nokia with its Communicator 9210i (9290 if you live in the US). Somehow, communication comes second @ Palm & PocketPC, while Nokia, of course, is first a communications company and second a PDA one. Take a GOOD look at the Communicator before judging other PDAs which don't offer you good integration between different communication methods.

Do you actually own a communicator,You must own one !!!!

I used to have one and it was the worst PDA i have ever used!!!!

The development packages were even worse for it.

I hope the Ericsson P800 makes better use of the symbian platform than the communicator!!

Yet more market share numbers for Q1-2002

UK based research firm Canalys has issued a new report detailing how the European, Middle Eastern, and Asia markets (EMEA) break down for Q1-2002. According to the report, Palm's unit shipments dropped 48% last quarter while the company accounted for 33.8% of the market, down from 45.3% the year prior. Following Palm was Compaq with a 36% increase in growth and 20.9% market share and Nokia with a 27% decrease in shipments and a share of 9.2%. Casio and Handspring rounded out the top five with 7.2% and 6.6% respectively with both companies seeing a decline in growth from Q1-2001. It should be noted that unlike the IDC numbers released earlier this week, these numbers include "feature phones, smart phones, and wireless handhelds" which would include the Handspring Treo. HP was the only other company besides Compaq to see growth for this quarter, managing a 12% gain, although their market share is only 6%. Also of note, while Palm shipped close to 88,000 more devices than Compaq, Compaq managed to bring in more cash with €92m compared to Palm's €77m. The Canalys report also breaks down the numbers based on platform where the PalmOS share dropped from 54% to 43% while Windows CE device share rose to 34% from 18%. Symbian managed to stay level with 13% of the market, just as they were last year at this time.
