Dear friends
I have a strange problem, I get kernel panics nearly every time I boot the machine or restart. Following is the report I get after it boots:

What is the result when you boot to your hardware test?
It should come up by restarting while holding the letter D.
If not, insert your original installer DVD (disk #1 of the 2-DVD set that originally came with your MacBook Pro), and boot with that DVD, again holding the D.

If that hardware test result is OK, then try updating to the current 10.6.4, as you appear to still be on 10.6.3. 10.6.5 should be released in a few days, I expect. Download and install the current combined OS X updater. Here's the page for 10.6.4: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1048

Your crashes seem to key on the NVIDIA drivers, and updating your system may help with that.
Do you usually use the low power - or the high performance setting (in your Energy Saver pref pane)?

thanks for your reply
my version is 10.6.4

I rerun the hardware test and it passed the memory and then gave the error:
4SNS/1/40000001:TB1T-0.000
when running the main logic board test. I am out of warranty does that mean the death of the machine?

That's a temp sensor error code. Could be a problem requiring replacment of the logic board.
Try this: Reset your power manager (called System Management Controller), by shutting down, unplugging your power cord, and removing the main battery. Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds, then release. Put the main battery back in, and plug the power cord back in.
Press and release the power button. immediately press and hold Option-Command-P and R. You'll hear the boot chime sound. Keep holding those same 4 keys until you hear the boot chime 2 more times. Release the keys, and let your Mac start up normally.
Try the test again now. If you get the same failure code, then the fix is replacing the logic board. (not cheap!)

I did what you suggested, and retested again, and there was no trouble found, what does that mean is that all, or this is a recurrent condition, thanks a million

Could be just a one-time glitch, and the resets cleared it. Will it ever return? I can't predict the future... :D

The kernel panics may have contributed to the error, or the error in the sensors caused the kernel panic... The only way that you can know - is to use your Mac, and if you get a kernel panic again, you can then decide what you must do...

its happening again this time in the middle of working, with the following error after boot:

but what I want to know why I can't reinstall macos and it always stop on the same line shown in the first thread posting, does it have to to do with the logic board, now I have to live with the same hard disk which can't be defragmented or formatted and macosx which can't be reinstalled and the panics, and will changing the logic board help, or do I just ditch this machine altogether
thanks

Looks like its something to do with NVRAM. We can only do so much on a free forum, even though some of us are techs and see this stuff in real time. Take it in for repair already.

I got the logs from ASD, the following is the startup ASD OS, before I press on start test:

[10/19/10 12:01:35] * 1 TEST(S) FAILED * [Elapsed time = 00:00:30]

what's peculiar, is that :
1. my OSX is 10.6.4 but the ASD OS test is showing 10.5.6.
2. If I run the test "Video Controller Internal: Gmux switch to EG and Verify"
it passes, even if done many times.
3. the panics always happen on boot, not when the system is running.
4. ASD EFI test passed all, and all other ASD OS tests too.
following is the test when done from within shen the system is running:

Local machine info: Mac OS X version = 10.5.6(9G3553) IP Address:127.0.0.1 ASD version:3S130

[13:03:02] Test Passed

what does this mean, thanks

The ASD OS test does not use or test your installed OS X, but uses the OS that's on that ASD disk. In your case, it's 10.5.6. The OS test is just one of the two test modes, with the other being an EFI test.
All the better reason to take to an Apple service shop, who will have up-to-date diagnostics for your MacBook Pro, not the older one that you have. The current ASD for your MBPro is 3S132

I am in Kuwait and the service people are in Dubai, it is too expensive to send it there and then they will conclude that the defect is in the logic board, and it is too expensive here (around 2100 $), so I find it not worth it, that is why I am trying to do it myself if there is any hope in the machine.
why is failing the test on startup and then passing when the machine is already running, thanks

Perhaps I missed it, but what machine is your Mac?

A few things to consider. If your logic board is fried/frying, your computer will be fried . . . dead . . . so that is it. No amount of praying to the Gods of Apple will change that.

Since you state to have the Guru's in your "area"--Dubai?--repair it will basically cost the same as a new computer here are some things to try:

1. Ifixit Google-thou that and get the manual for your computer--even print it out. It gives step-by-step instructions designed for complete idiots like me to replace everything. I do not see where you specify your machine, but the newer ones are even easier to replace memory, hard drives, and flux capacitors [Stop that.--Ed.]

2. Check the Memory--yes, I know, a program said it was fine. They are not good enough to diagnose failing memory. The only one I am aware of is the shareware "memtest"--costs about $1.50. I had a failing chip that this program--and only this program--diagnosed. The Gurus at Tech Tools conceded that even their test fails to diagnose failing memory.

Under "stress" one chip can cause kernel panics. Memory is cheap, maybe you can even upgrade. Data Memory Systems is one I use since they guarantee their memory for life--and replace without question. Others can suggest other places.

So . . . for a few $$$ you may fix the problem.

3. Replace the Logic Board--online you can actually get them reasonable--here is a quick search of one place: priceit.biz, but I would use a place with reputable dealers. Some Gurus HERE can help you with recommendations. $150-300 is a lot cheaper than $2,100.

Follow the directions from the guide above. I did it. You can do it.

4. It Not the Logic Board--er . . . this is beyond my knowledge, but I trust the Gurus HERE--it could be something else, you replace memory, the logic board . . . and . . . there you go. IF you can just get the thing diagnosed, that might be worth it--then work on it yourself.

Best!
