panther install help

i've got panther sitting right here beside me. unopened and just screaming to get tried out. however, i have to find the answers to some questions first, and that is where you come in...

i have 10.2.8 installed right now. classic is installed as well. the only disc that came with my mac is a restoration dvd. if i do a clean install of panther, how can i get classic on it?

is it possible for me to partition my current hd and keep my current setup on one partition and put panther on the other? i think the answer is no, but i have to ask. that wraps up my questions. i need to go outside now.

Which Mac do you have? Did you get it new or used? It sounds weird it came with 1 cd only, but then - e.g. the new Powerbooks came out with just1 dvd that says "Software install and restore", but that has everything.

Nope, you can't partition unless you wipe the entire drive and do a new install.
Make sure, if you can, to backup any important files that you can't replace.

use software restore in the apps folder on your hard drive. put the system restore DVD in, and choose to install classic support
classic didnt want to start after i upped tp panther, so i re installed it.

If you bought your machine new and the DVD is the only disk that came with it, you should be able to wipe the drive, install Panther, then use the restore DVD and do a custom install just to install Classic. Make sure when you wipe the drive, if that's what you decide to do, to install the drivers for OS 9. Pay attention and you'll see that option, I believe in Drive Setup, otherwise you won't be able to install Classic.

no...
you have a G5 right?
G5's cant boot into OS 9. Neither can any other computers on apples lineup right no (cept the G4 PM's and G3 iBooks.)

I would say back up your data, wipe and partition the drive, and reinstall OS 9 first, given that your computer can boot it. Then you can go ahead and install Panther.

yes, i have a g5. i know that i can't boot to os 9. i haven't had it long enough to know the ins and outs of the install process. but you all agree that i should install os9 drivers when i'm doing the panther install? i'm going with the vote here.

Don't know about the G5, but I would install the drivers to make sure you can use Classic anyway. They'll only take a little kbs.

That was rude!
Anyway, here's what I would do (not to sound rude or anything, I'd really do it!):

Update all my software, get rid of OS 9 for good. :D

honestly, i hate os 9. and i don't have anything on there right now that uses os 9. but i know that as soon as i get rid of it, i'll download something that does. better safe than sorry i'm thinkin.

da, da da, da! <- exit music
