Panther install problems

I have 2 X partitions on my Ti to run different versions (LE & HD) of ProTools as they don't like sharing system folders.
The LE side started behaving oddly tonite. DU didn't fix enough. Cmd-S found many problems. DW did it's best, it's never failed me before, but that partition still wouldn't wake up.
So I decided to do an archive install of Panther. The install stopped just after Asian fonts or thereabouts. Tried again same thing. Wipe the part from DU, tried a fresh install. Same thing. Tried from a known good back-up copy. Same thing.
The other partition (knock silicon) seems fine.

Just tried an erase install after already erasing with DU and repairing the disc.
Also zapped the pRam and soft reset the PMU by popping the battery and power for a minute. Still stops in the same place. Sometime after the 2 parts of BFD are in.
Tried from a 2nd back-up set that I've used recently, successfully.

Fails in the same place. Help!

Sounds like the hard drive has a problem. Reformatting the entire drive and repartitioning wil problably solve the problem, unless the hard drive is on it's way out.

this morning I got an error when attempting to run repair disc from the install CD. So I'm starting top think the drive may be going. I'm going to try to format the part and see, but...

I've always been a big fan of partitioning hard drives, especially under OS9, but I've had a LOT of problems with them under Panther. It may be unrelated to your problems, but my advice would be to reformat to a single partition.

I'd love to have one drive, but it simply can't be done with ProTools as of yet.
Some clients want OS9, some X, some LE, some TDM or HD.
It has worked flawlessly for the last year, but there was a recent rental.....
