Panther - log out problem

I'd rather be fishin'
I had a need to log out earlier today. When I did, I got a black screen and nothing. I had to hard restart the computer (Dual 1Ghz MDD; OS X 10.3.3, 1.5GB ram).

So, I reboot to my DiskWarrior CD and rebuild the directory. I then reboot to the normal drive and then repair permissions - a HUGE list of repaired permissions.

I then try to log out again and the computer, instead of bringing up a "log-in" screen, opens a black screen with Darwin/BSD login.

No matter what I have tried - a simple log out brings up this same Darwin log-in screen.....

I am about to go nuts.

Restart the computer and hold down the Apple + S. You will be in Single User screen. When it is done running the various routines you will see localhost#.

type in fsck -y (note there is a space before the hyphen). If it refuses type in
fsck -fy (space before hyphen).

If when it is done it says File system was modified... do it again. And keep on typing in fsck -y until you get the message HD appears to be ok.

Then type in exit and you should get to the normal log in screen.
