I recently upgraded to Panther and did a system security updates thru OSX's system update. Now the icons on the top right of my menu bar (clock, volum, os9, language,etc) are all disappeared. I created another user account and all back to normal. Since the screwed up account is the administrator account, I would like to fix it if possible. Can anyone shed a light? Thanks.

You can check in the System Preferences for things like this -- for example, open "Date & Time" in the System Preferences, click the "Clock" tab and check to see if "Show the date and time" is checked. You may also want to check it and uncheck it a couple of times to see if it has an impact on the menubar.
If this works, explore the other system preferences to re-enable your other missing icons.

Checking the date and time, and other preferences (language, os9 etc.) does not help. The system simply unchecks them. As to the volumn bar, the system unchecks it right before my eyes. I've even removed files from the preference folder, which let the system creates fresh new ones (used to solve certain application problems in older versions of mac os), but that fails to solve the problem.

I've gone on such witch hunts before and I'd suggest simply creating another Admin user. Enable "fast user switching" in the System Prefs. Copy your mail and bookmarks to the new user and be done with it. It is amazingly easy to do this with fast user switching.
Then when you feel comfortable, just delete the old admin account.

I've done disk repair and disk permission repair, but no luck. As to the suggestion of deleting the original administrator, (created during installation), would it cause any problem down the road. In windows XP, the original administrator login is needed to perform certain system level tasks outside of the GUI, I wonder if the same thing applies to osx. Do I need to go to the Unix side of things to thoroughly remove the administrator user account (detail instructions please)?
