If the rest of my of experience with Panther doesn't go any better than the first 90 minutes have gone, I'd dump it and go quickly back to 10.2.8! In fact, I'd do that right now if I knew how without losing all the applications and files on the computer. Needless to say, judging from the reviews I've read and the comments here on the forum, my experience may be unique so perhaps someone can help me.
First, I'm running on an old OS X 10.2.5 system on a different computer from the one which is causing me problems. This one is working perfectly, thank goodness.
Panther which just arrived today was installed in about 40 minutes as expected on a Titanium G4 running at 500 mhz. Upon restarting I got my initial desktop screen, but could not load any application. The Finder continued to recycle. By that I mean that the menu bar would appear and then disappear and then reappear and disappear, etc., in a continuous cycle. A couple of times I got a message about a Symantec incompatibility and was able to keep the finder operational long enough to do a find on all the Symantec files on the drive and remove them. Unfortunately, the cycling continues.
Bottom line, I have a PC loyal friend visiting from out of town who has been using my internet connection to get his email, so I've created a User screen for him. I want to be able to make this thing work as a persuasion tool about the confidence I have in Mac and Apple (and I am an exceedling loyal Mac user), but at the moment I'm experiencing great frustration. Can anyone help, please?
Thanks!
