I can't find any listings i.e. what internal DVD writers and Digital cameras is supported by OS X 10.3?

I want to know if NEC ND2500A DVD writer is supported ok in 10.3?

Internal DVD burners - Pioneer 105, 106. Both will work with all Apple apps, the 106 works in OS X only for these apps.

Apple says the Superdrive is required, but some third-party CD-RW and DVD-RW drives may also work.

Thanks Bobw,
But I know that the NEC ND2500A DVD is working in OS 9.2.2/Beige G3 and for Toast 5.2.3 and it's also bootable, but how will I find out for OS X 10.3 and iDVD etc. ??

I find the NEC ND2500A DVD very good and CHEEP ($120 about) :)

Just about any drive will work with Toast. Apple programs are a different story. iDVD only works with internal Superdrives. The Pioneer is what Apple uses.

What about Lite-On? I've got one at work in a Lacie Firewire external case that works fine, but I don't know whether buying a similar for internal (without the Lacie interface) will work in my Sawtooth G4.
Basically I want an internal CD-RW/DVD-R, and ebuyer are doing one for about £25 including tax.
Anyone having any experience with Lite-On? In fact has anyone had any bad experences with any third party internal CD-RWs?

Actually scrathc that you've swung me on the NEC, it looks pretty good, and I'll need a DVD burner eventually I suppose....

If you want true compatibility with Apple's iLife apps as well as Toast, get the Pioneer 106D. It's around $100 - $150, installs internally in any tower machine and is natively supported by OS X for ALL burning. Go with any other brand and you're risking incompatibility.

No external burners are supported with iDVD, no matter what. It has to be an internal SuperDrive. I don't know about DVD Studio Pro, but I would assume it's the same.

A website named xlr8yourmac has a database of drives compatible and incompatible with various flavors of Mac OS X on various flavors of machines. Do a search here before you purchase to see what other users have experienced with certain drives:

There is no need to use a Pioneer drive.

I found a little prog called "patchburn 2" wich enables your "unsupported" drive to burn within all iapps including itunes and idvd. ( I needed to get my nec_dvd +/- drive (in an FW enclosure) working with itunes)

Basically, it just creates a discRecording directory in you library folder which contains another directory with the name of your burner. In this directory a .drprofile file can be found which lists the manufactor, the drives name and features. (Patch burn does all this stuff automatically, so you don't have to worry about this)
After this, files and folders are created and your drive is listed as "compatible". This is the best way to get rid of this "it isn't invented here - go buy a pro machine with super drive" Apple attitude.
