Panther without DVD installation???

Hi, I have a question concerning Panther installation.

I have a clamshell iBook (non-firewire) with a 24X drive that cannot read burned CD's OR DVD's of any sort (duh). I have a copy of 10.3.2 Panther but the installation discs are DVD formatted, and I fear that I will need to purchase an external drive just to be able to install the copy of Panther I purchased.

Please, just tell me if anything can be done.

When you buy Panther, it comes on CDs.

Maybe you are proposing to re-use the DVD that comes with a new computer... in this case you are not covered by the license (single computer).

Ha, absolutely true.

I purchased a second mac recently, and instead forking out the extra $100 (seeing as I am already in the hole for my new comp) I planned to just install Panther from the disc provided for my other comp. I have been doing this for years with every new computer or software upgrade I purchase, seeing as I am the only owner.

I fail to see what is wrong with that.

It is not "that" wrong... it's just that the license you buy with your computer does not cover that case.

Well, quite right. I'm not here for an ethical debate.

I am asking if there is a way to get around the "can't read burned CD's or DVD's" problem.

This also annoys me because of the burned CD's aspect which closes me off to the possibility of reading media of my interest.

Are you try'in to read CDRW's or CD-R's --- I also have an older machine, CD ROMs from back then can not read CDRW's ---- I would suggest burning a new CD on a CDR and verify it on a new machine and then try it on the older. I have found this to be true for older pc's along with Macs, them old cd rom just can't do it.

Good luck

No, I've tested, and it is not the CD's. They work fine on my other computers.

It's just an old drive.

Well, what I'm getting out of this is that I have no other choice than to waste money buying software I already have.

I was thinking maybye it was possible with one of my comps to save the DVD data on one comp, transfer it, and execute it on my other one.

Just to make you feel less sorry: it's not "waste money" when you buy another copy of a software you got with another system. This is how everyone does. Hope you feel better after this. ;)
On the other hand: if you are not going to have two panther copies installed, but just gonna use the one on your clamshell, you might want to contact apple and tell them about this. I am positive they might send you the CD version, if you give them back the DVD one..

I have the same kind of iBook as you and I can read burned CDs.

Too bad Panther doesn't have a network installation option
