Parallels Help on Installation of Windows XP

I have installed parallels and I have an installation disk for Windows XP Home Edition. I have put in the product key and it seems to have installed, etc. When it is starting up after the screen the first screen included, the second screen comes up when I choose option 2- boot from CD-ROM. If i boot from harddrive, then a black screen appears with a horizontal grey line on the right side. I do not know what to do. I have tried typing in everything I can think of to move on to the next step, but nothing I seem to do works. Please help!

BTW, it looks like you were using a Dell OEM disc with Windows XP. This won't work. You need the full version of XP.

Are you using Service Pack 2? That's the only version of Windows XP that's supported, whether it's Home or Pro.

I think you are confusing Parallels with Boot Camp.
Boot Camp requires Win XP SP2, Parallels has no such requirement to my knowledge.
I have installed an original boxed release of XP with no service packs whatsoever, and it works fine.
As a side note here, I think you nailed the problem correctly about it being a Dell OEM version.

If I have a product key, how do I get a copy of XP without ordering an entirely new CD that requires tons of money for the product key?

Even if you have a product key - both your screen shots seem to show a Windows 98 boot disk for a Dell system (and not XP at all). Probably not helpful with a Parallels install anyway. Go to Amazon, or eBay for a good price on WinXP install disks.

Any OEM-Version of Windows bundled with specific hardware is _not_ licensed to be installed on your Mac in Parallels. You _will_ need a retail disk (or OEM disk) with a new license key.
