Hi

Can I run Parallels on my OS X Server and run an application that all my clients can access?

Thanks

Glenn

You can with a couple of caveats. You need a fully licensed operating system to run in the virtual machine. For instance you can not use the serial number for the copy of Mac OS X Server which is running as the Host OS as the Guest OS too. You also can't install Mac OS X Desktop as a Guest OS, as Parallels won't allow it due to the Apple end user license.

Having said all that, I use a few XServes at work each with 4 Virtual Machines on and my advice is: RAM. Plenty of RAM. You can't have enough RAM! Also, don't try to run more than one VM off of a single hard disk, the I/O becomes too much and the whole thing grinds to a painful halt. Rather, go for a RAID 5 which spreads the I/O load over a number of disks and provides you with a bit of fault tolerance for what I consider is the number one drawback for using VMs. If the hardware hosting your VMs goes down you loose more than one 'server'.
