Partition Hard Disk

Partitioning the drive is dividing it into smaller parts, so it appears as multiple disks on the desktop. I do it to keep my stuff organized. When I have a seperate partition for Mac OS X, and an other one for downloads, applications, music, etc, I can do whatever I want with the Mac OS X partition without affecting my other stuff. E.g. if the system once gets really messed up, I can just backup my important files from the Mac OS X partiton to the other one and format it 
I don't partition drives anymore. Current speeds of drives for general purposes you won't notice seek time differences. Yes you can do it as organization purposes, altough i wouldn't recommend backing up to a partition. If a drive corupts or fails you still loose everything, you'd be better off getting a second drive for bu purposes. After all ide drives are dirt cheap anymore and are deffinately worth it if you were to loose your work due to a drive gone bad.

certainly if you have an external drive, there is not much reason to partition. but if you don't it's not a bad idea to have a couple just for the purpose of having two boot drives from which to run repairs - boot one and repair the other and vice versa. of course having a boot disk with your repair program on it makes this unecessary as well.
there was a time when partitioning helped reduce certain conflicts and abilities to use certain older apps, but those days are looooong gone.
