partitioning a drive

I have an external hard drive 80gb maxtor one touch. It is currently a dual partition. Can I merge them somehow? I would like to and if it's possible, I hope you can help and thank you in advance.
 
as far as i know, the only way to 'mearge' them is to reformate the whole drive and then partistion it as one.
