password problems with apache

following the instructions in This post I have a symbolic link to a directory outside my sites folder, and I have it coming up asking for the password, however I can't get it to accept the password, I have changed it several times, it just keeps asking for the password, and never allows me access to the folder. I've been looking through the apache docs but have been unable to find anything helpfull... I know I didn't supply a lot of info, but I am not sure what info you would need... does anyone have any suggestions as to what might be keeping apache from accepting the user/pass? (I can submit more info if needed)

well, no one has even looked at this post, so this may be for nothing but here is what it says in my error log...

Fri Jan 31 19:32:56 2003] [error] [client *ip*] (2)No such file or directory: Could not open password file: /usr/private/etc/httpd/.htpasswd
[Fri Jan 31 19:32:56 2003] [error] [client *ip*] user *username* not found: /music


other than the things with *'s around them, it is word for word....

any suggestions?
