Password very slow to respond

I'm running a 17in Macbook Pro and am finding that when I'm prompted to put in my password, for any reason, it's very slow to respond. This occurs anywhere where I'm prompted for the password. Usually takes between 10 and 30 seconds to respond.

I've cleaned up with Onyx. I've not installed any new software.

Does anyone have any ideas.

Go to accounts and set to log in automatically to see if there is still a problem. While you are in accounts might want to check how big of a list of login items you have.

Thought of that Chevy, but I've got 50gb+ of space on a 250gb drive. I'd be a little surprised it that was causing it to be so slow. It's been lower than that and I haven't had the same problem.

Thoughts.

Good point, but it works fine when set to automatic login. The problem is patchy. This morning it has varied between 10 seconds and a minute.

My login items haven't changed for several weeks, but I'll kick them out one by one and see if that has any effect.

Any further thoughts gratefully received.

Just go to utilities/activity monitor and keep it up and running and keep track of the active processes. When it happens just observe what process is at the top of the list or hogging up the CPU. Post back here with the name of that process.

Had a look at the processes.

Nothing seems to be hogging at the moment, although skype and growl seem to be using a lot of memory. However, both have been there for ages so that's no change.

Set up a test account and get the same delays with the password.

So frustrating that I'm thinking of doing a clean re-install of Snow Leopard.
