path to X -> fix the illegal address request in 9

chemical precursor
had some old beige g3 parts laying around and though it
would be fun to build a frankenmac. thought.

seems like the machine wants to boot into 9 off its internal SCSI
get the happy mac and the splash screen, but it bombs after it loads
the first extension saying...

sorry, a system error occurred - illegal instruction
reboot with extensions off.

...and i reboot with extensions off and i still get this error message.

when i boot from the 9.2.1 CD, i STILL get the same message. Push the
CUDA - ZAP the pram apple+opt+P+R (i assume these do the same thing)
all leads me back to the bomb.

the only things attached to the motherboard are...

1 ATA cable & CDROM drive
1 SCSI cable & 4gig SCSI drive with 9.2.1 already loaded
g3 266 processor
4mb VRAM
32mb Apple memory
rev C ROM
voltage regulator

would love to get this unit to X but cant get past 9 ... or the hardware
for that matter.

also. i have tried to boot to X off the CDROM, but the grey screen goes
black after a minute or so and never comes back.

PLEASE if anyone has any voodoo, i could sure use it right now.

thanks.

You need more memory installed. At least 128 MB and it will work smoothly. OS 9 needs that much. 64 MB might work. I am not sure.

thought of that one and ran down to the store & grabbed a 128 stick
of 168pin pc 100 goodness, but that didnt fix the problem. replaced the
rev C ROM with a rev B Apple ROM.

Second verse same as the first.

do i need to hold a seance over its ..uh.. body?

I wonder if you need a firmware update on that processor to run OS 9.

Try booting it with an OS 8.x CD. See if that will work. Have you tried using Norton Utilities to boot with?
