PB15 Brightness Controls & Resolution

Since Tiger upgrade have lost ability to change screen resolution or to adjust display brightness. Function keys F1 and F2 disabled. System Preferences Panel (Displays) no longer shows slide bar for adjusting brightness either. It also only indicates one screen resolution as default.

No errors or flags during boot up, on screen or in logs. Plugging to TV, preferences panel correctly recognises VGA screen and options (resolution limited to 1 instance)

Not a major problem but it does make PB run hotter than necessary and it drains battery much faster.

Any help much appreciated, Apple support board has drawn blanks...

Setup a new user account and see if you have the same issue over there. Did you update panther to tiger or freshly install it?

I had the issue with the F-keys not working happen to me when I installed the 10.4.1 update. I couldn't use them to change the display brightness, change the sound level, or eject CDs/DVDs with them.

I decided to log out, and found out that selecting it in the Apple menu just wouldn't work. Nor would the Restart, Shut Down, or Sleep items. So then I selected the About This Mac item, just to see if it was working, and boy was that strange. The window popped up near to the left of the screen then just started moving on its own to the left and up. It was like the mouse was moving it. It kept moving until it was off the screen - for all I know, it kept moving, but I couldn't see it anymore so I couldn't say. That was the strangest thing I've ever seen. Wish I had a video camera or some such that I could have caught that with. I even tried moving the mouse over the title bar and dragging it to stop it from moving, but that didn't work.

Anyway, I did get it to log out, by pressing Shift-Command-Option-Q. This will log you out immediately without popping up the dialog box asking for comfirmation. Interestingly, the Shift-Command-Q (which logs you out with the confirmation dialog) didn't work. Once I logged back in, everything was working fine again.

Since it looks like you restarted, I couldn't say if this would work or not for you, but it's worth a try.
