PCI slots on G4 AGP Graphics not working...?

Hi guys. Decided I wanted to go wireless. I ordered a Linksys WP54G PCI card for my G4 and installed it. No luck, so went to Orangeware.com and downloaded their trial software. Still not showing up. I went to System profiler and checked PCI slots... didn't recognize the card. Decided to blame Linksys and so went to Best Buy and got Netgear WG311, which Orangeware.com states is compatiable. The same result- no card showing up, tried all three available PCI slots. Still nothing. What am I missing?? All 3 PCI slots not working, you think? Your educated opinions would be welcome. Thanks!

try another pci card if you have access to one. see what happens. if its a sawtooth G4 it could very well be dead pci slots. I have read the sawtooths sometimes suffer from dead pci slots and dead usb after the system is 3-4 years old.

Try a Mac compatible card. Both the Links and Netgear are PC cards. Their sites don't show as being Mac compatible.

As for the Sawtooths having PCI slots going bad after 3 or 4 years, I've never heard that before. I have a Sawtooth and haven't had any problems.

Its only a small number of them. I have also seen 2 or 3 sawtooths on ebay where one had dead usb and the other had dead usb and pci. as I said it is rare, something to do with the on board controllers.

Suppose my PCI slots are dead. How can I confirm this if I don't have any other PCI cards to test with?

And is it possible to either fix or replace the PCI slots?

*BTW the G4 is a AGP Graphics. Running the latest version of OS X which would be 10.3.6. 896 MB RAM. Just installed a second hard drive and runs beautifully. Only thing wrong is the dang PCI slots!

10.3.6?! The most current version is 10.3.5 -- if he's running a pre-release build of 10.3.6, all should be well, but pre-release versions are never guaranteed.

When you say that Apple System Profiler doesn't recognize the card, do you mean that absolutely no info is displayed for the card and that the system reports that there isn't even a card installed in that slot, or does it display information about the card but it just doesn't work?

Oops... 10.3.5 it is.

Yes, there is absolutely NO information displayed about the card. I'd feel better if it was displayed and it was jsut the card that wasn't working... that'd mean I would need a supported card. However, the only thing that shows up when I check the PCI slots is the ATI Rage graphics card.

ugh right?

Ugh is right... the Rage card showing up doesn't mean that the PCI slots are working, though, since the Rage card is in an AGP slot, and, hence, is controlled by a different controller.

I sure do wish you had another PCI card to test it with!

My friend was kind enough to lend me his Belkin Firewire/USB 2.0 PCI card and I installed it... presto... it was recognized! Strange. I've read about Netgear Linksys PCI Wireless cards being recognized either with Airport 3x or the Orangeware driver. Guess my G4 is too old, perhaps? I'll try to find an Airport card (harder to find since Apple doesn't sell them anymore) or Sonnet Aria PCI Extreme card and see what happens.

At least my PCI slots are alive!!!

Hi. WG311 is NOT compatible. Try the WG311T or WAG311. I'm using the first one and it works great. Actually, the WG311 is not listed as "compatible" on the OrangeWare site.
