PCMCIA modem not working in OS X

pry3i

chemical precursor
Once upon a lightning storm, pry3i neglected to unplug the phoneline from his trusty powerbook and as a result of being
careless, the gods saw it fit to fry his internal modem.

SO... being the cheap bastard that i am, i opted not to have
Apple fix yon toasty modem to the tune of 400$ and opted for
one of 3com's PCMCIA modems. The solution is just fine if you
run OS 9...

Thats all fine and good if you dont mind booting between
the two OS's. I am getting a bit tired of that, though.
As far as I can tell, its getting power. (the orange LED flashes
a couple of times on power up or when the card is ejected/
inserted) I just cant seem to get X.1.4 to recognize it.

Lack of driver you say. OK, maybe, but another mac of mine
has an aftermarket USB / Firewire card that needed drivers
for 9 but didnt for X... I know. apples and all other fruit.

Who am I waiting on, Apple or 3com? Is there a workaround?

ok. how about a hack to access the modem. seriously, i could use
some help on this one.
