Performance Issues When Networking

Im having problems with a G4 dual processor 1 GHz machine.

When it networks to our Linux based server using SMB, its performance slows down dramatically. I check to see what is using the CPU power but it is nothing out of the ordinary.

When I eject the network it speeds up again.

The problem is the computer needs to be networked all the time.

The setup is identical in another edit suite yet it has no performance issues as per this suite.

Would a complete reinstall help

Any Suggestions?

Whether a complete reinstall helps of course depends on the reason for the performance issue. How are the machines networked? Could it be that the Mac tries to reach the name/IP through the internet router for some strange reason? Is the _network activity_ okay, i.e. if you copy files to/from the server, is the performance of that okay?
