Pics of the Virginia Tech Cluster!

I was just wondering what it takes to maintain all those computers? Do you have to run software update on all of them? Is there some central "brain" computer that runs them all? If there is a link to this info that would be fine. Just curious.

Most people don't know it, because they're not Star Trek fans, but The Borg did not really come from the Delta Quadrant. They originated here, ON EARTH! The 1100 PowerMac G5 super cluster is an experiement in implementing artificial intelligence that went amok, leading to the The Borg Collective Mind. And yes, there is some "Super Brain" controlling this Borg Collective Mind experiment. In the initial experiment, she is one of Steve Jobs' neices. I know all this because, somehow, my brain is tuning-in a complex-coupled superposition of Chronoparticles, Tachyon emmisions, and multiphasic-waves that result in a perception of time-shifted information. In other words, I can see the future. However, the Borg Queen of the future is not Steve Jobs' neice, but Bill Gates DAUGHTER! This unfortitous event, a hostile take over, caused a break in the Space-Time Continuum, preventing the good of the proposed technology to help people all over the world, and instead precipitated the birth of The Borg as they are known in the distant future, first assimilating individual thinkers and civilizations through out the world, and eventually, the Delta Quadrant where Q had placed them, thank goodness, with the snap of his fingers.

I'll explain some more about this later....

All you touch and all you see is all your life will ever be.

BAH! We all know that the first Borg EVER created which of course is here on earth, it is actually Bill Gates! :p

The Altivec thing is prolly true, but it still works for Macs. And now that the G5 is out, maybe they'll optimise it! But its not dead, you can download it here.

You should all run the protein folding software from Stanford - it's much more beneficial to medical and science research than listening for silly signals from never never land. It would be cool if they actually heard something but I think there are more pressing issues facing mankind - like developing a cure for HIV or breast cancer - john.

Just out of curiosity, did you learn about folding@home from my post, or did you know about it before?

It *is* possible to run both if one should wish. Folding@home has a true OSX screen saver version, a graphic OSX app client, and a no-graphics text-based client for OSX.

Any of which *could* be run concurrently with Setiathome in app mode. For the record, I think both are worthwhile projects.

I wanna say "I quit SETI" but when you have 1.297 years worth of efforts put into it (or 713 results which round off to about 15 hours a result) its hard to leave...heh...but i have to agree with you anyway.

Virginia Tech has the first comprehensive solution to the problem of transparent fault tolerance, which enables large-scale supercomputers to mask hardware, operating system and software failures – a decades old problem. It's a software program called Déjà vu, designed by Varadarajan. He also integrated the software with Apple's G5s. This work will enable the terascale computing facility to operate as the first reliable supercomputing facility, according to Varadarajan, a National Science Foundation Faculty Early Career Development Program (CAREER) Award recipient.
Ironically, since every G5 is a personal supercomputer, this is basically a supercluster composed of supercomputers. How meta can you get?
