pismo backlight problem

The backlight on my Pismo is acting up. When I boot it comes on for a few seconds, then goes dark. After it has been asleep, when I move the mouse or touch keyboard to awaken, it does the same thing ... bright a few seconds then dark.

Two questions: One -- Any idea what the problem is and if it is something I can try to fix myself and Two -- Any estimated cost to repair it? Need to decide if I am better off buying a second one on eBay and transferring everything over (have an almost new battery so I figure another Pismo makes economical sense ... could use the current for parts if I don't repair it)

I used to have a Pismo and I can tell you don't buy a new screen from Apple, I think when I checked it was something like $400. No thanks! I bought one on eBay for around $180/200 and it worked great. The seller was from Utah.

The computer is old enough it's not beyond reason to think the screen would go out. I'd do the eBay thing:
