PISMO wont start UNLESS.....

UNLESS a firewire cable is plugged into my desktop. Then it will start up fine. Apple profiler reveals that all seems well.

If you unplug the firewire cable from the Pismo, it dies. If you have the desktop running with the cable plugged in to the Pismo, shut the desktop off, the Pismo stays running. Yes, the desktop is truly OFF. If at this point you unplug the firewire cable from the now completely shutdown desktop....the Pismo dies....and when i say dies, i mean immediately...POOF,dead.

I have tried start in target disc mode and ejecting the Pismo thinking maybe something somewhere in its tiny brain it has come to see that firewire cable as some kind of umbilical cord. Same thing happens. I've swapped out the mobo battery....nope....unplugged it, let it sit, plugged in just the AC...nope.....It will not start up from the DVD drive....oh, it will it if its plugged into my, F#$^@@@@)g desktop...I've reinstalled Tiger...NO NO NO!!!! same thing! and yes, it did at one point WORK without having to be plugged into that F%^###$&___ing firewire cable.

I'm sorry, i need a beer. I'm not making this up, i'll figure this out no matter how long it takes!!!! OK, again, i'm sorry...but this thing is kicking my butt.

Thanks for any insight!

Just to clarify, are you saying that your Pismo will only start up via Target Disc Mode, or just when a Firewire cable is attaching it to your Desktop? What OS version do you have on your Desktop and on the Pismo?

I am certainly not the expert on weird stuff that seems like a hardware problem, but if it was me, i think i would just try to find one of the first generation ipod power bricks that had the firewire plug on it and use that instead of my other computer. do you know the power pack i mean? One of these.
