Plain black desktop

I'm running OS X on a MacBook Pro. Could someone point me to the instructions for setting up my desktop to be a plain, solid color of my choosing (as opposed to the "Solid Colors" offered to me in the preferences)? I want basic black.

First, drag this image to your desktop:

Then, drag it to /Library/Desktop Pictures/Solid Colors

By the way, is this and other similar info documented anywhere? It seems rather basic, and I don't want to bother the forum with such fundamental questions.
