Play .Avi files on OSX???

I have a bunch of .avi files that I need to view on my Mac. I have the latest OSX and quicktime, but the files just open in QT and play audio. There is not video, just a white screen. Is there a program on OSX that will play these files? Or a plug-in for QT?

Thank you.

Most avi files will play in OS X and QT (particularly if you have DIVX installed), but a select few won't—the main one being files encoded with the IV50 codec. VLC and MPlayer won't play IV50 files either. There is a IV50 codec available for QT under classic (OS 9). That's about the only option right now, other than re-encoding the file on another system.

Install Divx for QuickTime (the version you need is free). VLC and MPlayer are great, don't get me wrong, but they just can't match the flexibility and rich feature set of QuickTime. I also find Divx to be faster than either VLC or MPlayer.

I find VLC and MPlayer to be vital tools, but I only use them when I can't get QuickTime to work — which is not too often.

(See my sig for some relevant links.)

Have you tried installing the codec for quicktime? I installed that, and .avi's played in quicktime. No conversions, or anything.

yep i tried that. no luck i would really love a step by step way of figuring this out. like i said. i am no developer. just a girl with a mac who wants to play her videos.

When you open the AVI in QuickTime and open the info window (Window menu -> Show Movie Info), what does it say under "format"?

it says:
IV50, 640 x 480, Millions
8-bit Unsigned Integer, Mono, 22.050 kHz

IV50 is Indeo® Video5, an ancient Intel video format. It is supported under Classic. To the best of my knowledge, no MacOS X QuickTime codec for this format was ever developed or released. It you have Classic installed, however, the Classic QuickTime Player should play it.
