If compatibility plays the major role you might have to move to Office 2004. This version has a compatibility checker which seemed to work fine for me. However, some features might not work on windows based powerpoint versions (which should be pointed out in Office 2004). I faced the same problem and ended up in saving the presentation as pdfs. Of course, all transitions and animations are lost for the price of maximum compatibility.
