Gah, I'm really disliking this formate. I know you have to have DivX to play these avi files but no where have I read a step 2. You know, as in what your suppose to do after you Downloaded DivX. I try to play the avi. files again and I'm given the same error window as before. Can someone please tell me what it is I need to do?

The .avi format is actually not just one codec, but several.
DivX will allow you to play most fairly-recent .avi files, but not all.

How old is this file? Is it on the web anywhere?

If VLC and MPlayer can't read it, then try installing the 3ivX codec, running the AVI into DivX Doctor II, and then opening the generated Mov file in QuickTime. Annoying, but it works well for me when all else fails.

If all else fails, it's probably a Intel Indeo codec. The easiest way I've found to make them usable is to launch in Quicktime (classic mode or in OS9). Then export it as a standard QT movie for future use in OS X.

You can still find the indeo codec extension from Apple's site for OS9. Unfortunately it's never been made OS X compliant.

anytime you ever need an app for a certain funtion just go to macupdate.com or versiontracker.com and search.

vlc and mplayer will let you play pretty much anything.

Yeah. Hardly ever have I seen something nowadays that wouldn't play in VLC.

I think it has to do with some new type on encoding/encryption that the new Windows Media Server/Client puts in AVI movies.

Don't those files have some .wmX ending? Could be wrong, though... You could use VirtualPC for them, but that might be a bit of overkill (and a bit expensive for just that use, too...). You _could_ of course also try Windows Media Player for the Mac. It's free (and ugly).

Some movie are necrypted and can only be read by WMP, and only with the correct rights (you know, same thing as the rights to listen to songs bought on iTMS).
