Playing DVDs from Different Regions...oh and VCDs too

Does anyone know of a way to watch dvds from different regions in OS X. I know there was a multi-regions Apple DVD player for OS 9, but it was a version 2.2 before a few of the updates apple released for the dvd player.

If anyone is interested the one for 9 was called Apple DVD Player 2.2 [region free].

I can't remember where i got it from. I think a friend. I don't know if it was a hacked version of the software or if it was sanctioned by apple.

If anyone has any thoughts or knows about a copy of it for 10.1 please let me know.

My wife is from Thailand and has quite a few dvd's she'd like to watch that her family sent her.

On another note, does anyone know how to play VCDs on 10? She's got some of those too from Thailand?

Well there are two steps that you need to take

1) If your DVD drive has Region locked firmware (firmware which locks up after x-amount of times) you need to find firmware upgrades and upgrade your firmware to firmware which wont lock up your drive (I needed to do this to my G3)

2) You need to download RegionX which allows you to set the region you want unlimited timed :) Even if you have 0 times that you can change your region, you can reset that number to 5 :p (if you have the appropriate firmware that is).


VCDs are not region locked AFAIK. I have some euro VCDS that play fine on my mac, I just use MacVCD (or something like that, there is a free one out on versiontracker).

I'm understand the changing of the region setting, but I don't know where that's done. On the drive itself? With the Region Free Apple DVD player it was all software....no hardware changes. If you like I can send you a copy of this regions free apple dvd software for you to look at.

I'll check on version tracker for RegionX, but how does it work? Do I have to set something in the hardware?

you have another solution to read DVD as well as VCD and this without any region restriction. USE VLC by videolan. It plays divx as well. TRY it it's a wonderfull app. Available at versiontracker and on the developper's website
