is it possible to play itunes with my laptop closed in any way? i'd like to use it for music while sleeping but would prefer to have the top down as protection from one of my cats. if not i can probably work something out, just wondering.

You can do it by installing NoSleep:

However, I will offer a warning: Macintosh portables, like the iBook and PowerBook aren't designed to run with the lid closed, except in sleep mode. Running the 'book with the lid closed can cause physical damage to the computer which is not covered under warranty.

Odd, not to doubt you ElDiablo, but this confuses me. I've got instructions for running laptops with the screen closed and using an external monitor from the knowledge base, and i don't remember it mentioning damage. Would it be different without the external monitor somehow?

Strange, I just read a bunch of TIL articles on running an external monitor, and they, in fact, do list compatibility with the lid closed. However, those TIL articles were for the PowerBook only. I believe that the iBook does not support closed-lid, external monitor operation, though, and that would lead me to believe that the iBook should not be used with the lid closed.

the powerbook G4 dissipates a lot of heat through the keyboard. it is designed to do that. it can run closed as long as the LCD is shut off like when using an external monitor. hacks that keep the powerbook G4 awake while closed do not shut off the LCD other than maybe turning it black. the heat coming up from the keyboard and the heat coming down from the LCD will damage both the LCD and the powerbook G4. ive seen LCDs warped from using such hacks.

so while it is supported to an extent, it is not with hacks and the way Apple can easily tell is if your LCD is warped.
