I have a mac. I downloded a file to my desktop. it ends in .sit. I was told to uncompress. how do I do this?

A sit file opens with "StuffIt", which is a compression program. It basically bundles up a series of files into a single file, and uses some clever mathematical tricks to squash the file down to about 60-70% of its original size.
The link Twister posted takes you to StuffIt's site, where you can download the StuffIt software, which will allow you to open .sit files.

Double click the .sit file. I believe Expander comes with your OS X system.
