Please Help!!! OSX 10.4 Mac Book Pro

I just bought a mac book pro from a friend and after reading that changing the short name was very difficult, I created a new acct used root to copy and paste all folders from the old acct replacing the new ones'. This is my first mac and I must've done something wrong because now I'm told "you do not have sufficient privileges" when I try to do things. I can't install firefox(which I thought would've just been copied over, I can't even set a new desktop. I hope it's just something simple. Please help and thank you in advance.
 
Changing the short name is not that big of a deal though netinfomgr. There are probably several good tutorials posted online for it. Did you make sure the new account was set as admin? Worse case scenario you may have to drag everything off the machine to an external drive then reformat and recreate the correct user then drag and drop the contents of the folders back into the folders of the fresh user you created.

If it were me, having just bought it and therefore not much in the way of apps & docs to save, I'd buy a Snow Leopard (OS 10.6) retail disk & install from scratch with a full reformat.
 
Yes - The new user is an Admin.
I've considered reformatting with a newer OS, but it has a bunch of music/movies I wanted to keep. I could live without it, but it'd be nice to have it.
