I tried to install ubuntu linux and tried to format my hardrive as an ext2, but foolish as i am i forgot to format only my partition and formatted the whole hardrive!! and now when i try to reinstall OS X, my ahrdrive isnt recognised..does anyone know what format my hardrive needs to be in?

Yes, you won't be able to install OS X on a hard drive formatted ext2

OS X wants you to use a partition formatted MacOS Extended (journalled) through Disk Utility.

You can access Disk Utility from Mac OS X install disc.
The options for formatting you have are HFS+ and HFS+ case-sensitive. Select the previous, aka Mac OS Journaled, it will work better.
