Plug in iPod loses place in mp3 files

While I know that having bookmarkable m4b files means your place will be restored the next time you play that track, I have a somewhat related question with regards to m4a and mp3 files:

Playing a non-bookmarkable track (mp3/m4a) and stopping/powering down will allow you to resume playback if your ipod hasn't lost power or been plugged into the computer.

However, I like to use my iPod not only as a media player but also as an external HDD.

Is there any way to prevent it from losing your place (other than converting everything to bookmarkable tracks)?

Thanks!

in iTunes. Select your song ~ Apple + i ~ Options ~ 'Remember Playback Position.
