POP settings in Mail.app

What pop settings should I be using in Mail.app, I have my user name and password and can collect messages ok, but when sending the server keeps saying it could not validate me?

Thanks in advance

That depends on your ISP. Check their web site for their Help Menu or button.

Should be something like this;

mail.yourisp.com
smtp.yourisp.com

Look for SMTP-settings instead of POP-settings. POP is a way of _getting_ mail, SMTP for sending.

Go to the ISPs home page and look for the email server settings and put those settings in your Mac's Mail.

Most likely your provider requires authentication prior to sending mail (by smtp). These settings are set when specifying the outgoing mailserver. Check either the website or the welcome letter from the provider. Or just give them a call.

Good luck, Kees

I have checked all of settings are correct and have now tried a couple of other email programs i.e. Entourage and thunderbird - my settings work fine with these applications! BUT still the same problem with Mail.app?

The problem may be one of the wrong choice of ports. It would help if you gave the name of your ISP. There are some ISP-specific "gotcha's" that require subtly different settings among different email clients.

Just to keep you up to date, I have checked with our contact and he has confirmed port 25. I have also tried the 'Connection Doctor' This checks out as ok when no username and password are entered for sending, but fails when username and password entered.

Check the SMTP (outgoing mail) server settings and make sure that identify check is disbabled. You need an identity check for POP3, but in general NO identity check for SMTP.

Good luck, Kees

Thanks I have tried this BUT still no joy!!! I have even tried to use the IP address instead of the name, it will just not authenticate me........

Compare the settings for outgoing mail between programs which work and mail. There must be a (minor) difference, which might be easily overlooked.

Good luck, kees

I am sure there is BUT god I just can't find it!! Oh well off on holiday for 2 weeks after today - so will try again when back.

Thanks for all your help everyone

I'd try to completely remove the account and enter everything again by hand, making sure there's absolutely no typo.
