Power Inverter for Car

I want to be able to keep my Pbook charged up in the car and saw some $30-50 power inverters at Circuit City.

Are these things safe to use with laptops? I worry about voltage spikes and the like damaging the power supply or even worse, the pbook.

Do any of you folks have experience with such devices? Any recommendations?
