when i connect my external hard drive or download a program, a message appears "you cannot open the application, because it is not supported on this system"--at one time, was able to connect my external harddrive and use my itunes library! please help!!

You need to supply more details about what you are trying to do.
There's a lot of current software that cannot run on a 10.4 system, so you should tell us exactly what software you need to use, and how you got it. You should include the version of that software.
As you mentioned iTunes, I suspect that you downloaded a current version of iTunes which can't run on 10.4.11
You'll need to upgrade to 10.5 to use that new iTunes.

Hi-My home Mac is nolonger working, so I need to use my ibook for itunes, open office (wont work due to previous thread) and additional programs! so basically what your saying is my system wont let me install newer programs! if I get 10.5 (how can I get it?) will programs work on this system? is there a cheap way to get 10.5 if thats the way I need to go? i also downloaded a program to convert youtube videos for ipod! I'm guessing its the same thing, I need 10.5? thanks for your help

Search for "OS X 10.5 installer DVD", and you will find a variety of sources. None will be cheap, however.

What's wrong with your "home Mac"? What model of Mac is that one?

Also, what model of iBook do you have? The processor speed might give me enough to decide which one you have. That's under the Apple menu, About This Mac. You can also then click on the More Info button in that window, which will open your System Profiler, showing you much more info about your Mac, such as the Model Identifier, and Memory.

Almost all software that you download will give you information about the system requirements - "Requires OS X 10.5 or higher", or something similar to that.

You have to buy a retail version of MacOS X 10.5. Do not make the mistake of buying a gray disc. They are System Restore disc and works only with a specific model Mac and will not work with your computer.

i have a imac8,1-mac os x 10.5.8, 2.4 HGz Intel Core 2 Duo, 2GB 800 MHz ddr2 sdram-well, first of all this has been the best Computer I have ever owned! I downloaded a cam video using "Vuze" several months ago, and thats were my problems have started! its been getting worst, and now I cant even use it! freezes all the time, spinning circle everytime I try to do anything or just touch my mouse & slow!! anytime I plug an external hard drive in, it states its been corrupt! FYI- Vuze has been a great program for me, but I got greedy & stupid, and downloaded some cam movies! ive used the program since 2008!----------------heres the info on my original mac i wrote about-ibook G4, 10.4.11, 1.33 GHz powerpc G4, 1GB DDR SDRAM, powerbook 6,7--at this point, Im not going to update the powerbook with 10.5, as it would be cheaper to get a newer(used)labtop! is it easy to download an earlier version of itunes for it?......if you could help me with my main Mac that I wrote about at the top would be great! ive been trying to remove my pics from iphoto, but its been difficult, as it stops & freezes! hoping to do a system reboot! thank again!!

It's easy to download an earlier version of iTunes, but it's not a good idea to install an older version of iTunes. Any iTunes version you'll decide to install should not be older than what was available when the version of Mac OS X you have had available.
Also some components of the system (and Quicktime) may not be downgraded properly if you install an earlier version.

What's the size of the hard drive on your (slow) affected Mac, and how much of the space of it is free? If it's under 15 % of the hard drive space free, clear more space.

If you don't install whatever app you're trying to install for viewing those cam videos, apart of slowness is the Mac working properly? Some crippleware that some weird ... videos install may need a newer OS (or require Windows); if viewing those videos is the only issue would it be possible to simply do that on some other Machine? I think your Mac doesn't like to show you those movies.

heres the info: mac os x 10.5.8, imac 8.1, 2.4 ghz intel core duo, 2gb 800 mhz ddr2 sdram- what I was saying, was i downloaded a cam video (which is a movie currently released) and I believe I got some kind of virus! my system is corrupt & not workingi have memory, so I dont believe thats the problem! my mac acts like its corrupt! thanks

OK. You do not have a virus. Based on your earlier posts, it sounds like you may have munged your system by tinkering with things that you do not understand.

Undo any changes/tinkering you made in the system done recently or just before the problems started.
(Such as if there were any changes made in /System or /Library. Or maybe the permissions of some file were changed on purpose?)
