Hi I have a G4 Powerbook and unfortunately i dropped it yesterday. It now wont read DVD's. It now reads CD's ok, which it didnt do at first, but when I insert a DVD I hear a "whurring" sound then it just spits it out. Any ideas what I can do to try and get it working again?

Thanks in advance

That could be a hardware problem, seeing as you dropped it. Did you run "repair disk" and "repair permissions" in disk utility?

Otherwise, you might have to take it to a apple tech to have your hardware checked. If you're under warranty, do this! If you're brave, you could try to install a new superdrive yourself.. but laptops are not easy to take apart, especially apple ones. Heres a superdrive upgrade:

(you will want to make sure that this is compatible with your powerbook before you buy, if you do)

Thanks Eric. Sorry to sound stupid but how do you do a disc repair.

I have been into Disk Utility but it doesnt give me the option to "Repair Disc" or "Verify Disc"

Cheers

Oh, thats the right name. Run those two tests. I'm doubtful it will do much, but it's worth a try.

It doesn't _give_ him the option, eric. ;) ... You have to boot from the installation DVD or CD and go to the Disk Utility in the Apple menu. You can only repair disks that are _not_ the system disk currently booted from.

Hi thanks for all the advice I really appreciate it. I have the start up CD in my computer - what exactly do I do now to run disk utility - ie how do I start up from the boot disc???

cheers ( and sorry for being so dense!!)

To start from the disk, just restart and hold down the "c" button to boot from something the CD/DVD drive.

Hi guys thanks for all your help. Just rebooted from start up disc but sadly no joy - guess my DVD is totalled : (

Thanks anyway
