Powerbook (Firewire) install problem

When I try to install to a 4GB partition on my internal hard disk, the installation proceeds much of the way (leaving 3000+ files on the disk) then stops, saying the installation couldn't be completed because some "operation is not permitted."

This is a totally clean partition, just reclaimed and reformatted from an install of LinuxPPC.

Any clues? Anybody else see this problem?
